Johnie M. Williams was the former secretary-treasurer of the American Federation of Government Employees Local 1199.
A federal grand jury indicted him on 162 counts of embezzlement from the union's bank accounts and three counts of filing false annual financial reports with the Department of Labor. The thefts between January 1993 and October 1996 totaled $72,547.
The checks were made out to cash, to Williams or his creditors.
The local union represents about 220 active and 30 retired civilian employees at Nellis and a related facility in Indian Springs.
