Victim in fatal freeway accident identified

Wednesday, Aug. 26, 1998 | 1:29 a.m.

A man killed early Tuesday by a van heading the wrong way on U.S. 95 has been identified by the Nevada Highway Patrol as Craig Schofield, 39, a floor manager at the Sahara Hotel.

And the driver of the Toyota Sports Utility vehicle that was heading east in the westbound lanes near Valley View Boulevard has been identified by troopers as Josephine L. Moulchin, 43.

She remains hospitalized today with spinal fractures and a broken jaw, troopers said.

Troopers are trying to figure out why Moulchin entered the freeway on Decatur Boulevard and headed in the wrong direction, slamming head-on into the Mercedes 900 being driven by Schofield. Blood was taken from Moulchin shortly after the 3:57 a.m. accident, but test results will not be available until next week.

Moulchin was pulled from her burning utility vehicle by two motorists. She remains in intensive care at University Medical Center after doctors performed surgery late Tuesday in an attempt to save her foot.
