* LITERACY DAY DINNER -- The second annual International Literacy Day Dinner is set for 6:30 p.m. Sept. 10 at the Rio hotel-casino. The evening begins with cocktails and a silent auction. The program that begins at 7:30 p.m. will include the presentation of the Literacy Pioneer Award. Community leaders and organizations are invited to attend this event which promotes literacy awareness and recognizes leaders in adult education. The International Association of Business Communicators Las Vegas Chapter, and Nevada Bell are sponsoring the event. Tickets are $50 a person or $500 a table. Proceeds will benefit the Southern Nevada Literacy Coalition. For more information call, 382-3493.

* SATURDAY NIGHT FISH-FRY -- The Louie Jordan Commemorative Scholarship is having its second annual Saturday Night Fish Fry fund-raiser 7-11 p.m. Saturday at the Rainbow Library Amphitheater. Four scholarships will be awarded to deserving high school recipients. For tickets or more information, call 255-6195.

* CHILD SEEKERS BENEFIT -- Bix's restaurant will host a 12-hour benefit to raise money and community awareness for Nevada Child Seekers. The benefit, from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, will include a five-course menu created by Executive Chef Steven Zucker. Blues artists Ray Bailey and Alex Ligertwood -- former lead singer of Santana -- will perform throughout the evening. Nevada Child Seekers is a nonprofit organization committed to locating and protecting missing, abducted and runaway children. * CARING COMMUNITY -- The Salvation Army's food bank was in urgent need of canned and dry-food items this summer. Already, 195,000 of the 200,000 items needed have been delivered and there are still many groups doing food drives. The Salvation Army now has food for the thousands of people coming every month to its family service for emergency assistance. The holiday food drive will start in November. * SCHOOL SUPPLY DRIVE -- Several businesses in the community partnered with Fox 5's "Take Time for Kids," to help students currently residing in MASH Village, the Salvation Army, the Women's Development Center, the Women's Crisis Center and the Shade Tree Shelter. Saturn of Henderson and West Sahara donated $2,500, members and employees of Sams Club-Pecos collected $2,200 and the Wal-Mart Foundation will match the $2,200 donation. Corporate Express donated $750 in school supplies and Vons and Costco both provided gift certificates. Additionally, the Regional Transportation Commission supplied two CAT buses to transport the students from their places of residency to Saturn of Henderson for lunch, which was catered by the Saturn Cafe and to receive their backpacks and supplies. They also took pictures of each student and provided them with a picture ID, which entitles them to discounted fares on public transportation. Ethel M Chocolates donated M&M's for dessert.

* RAVEN'S WISH COMES TRUE -- Raven is a 14-year-old girl living in Las Vegas. Unfortunately, she has leukemia and recent hospital stays have caused her spirits to wane. So GameWorks, in the Showcase Mall, along with the Make-A-Wish Foundation recently threw a party to cheer her up and make her wish come true. Gameworks donated a laptop computer to Raven.

* TEEN JOB-TRAINING GRANT -- Citibank Nevada has provided a grant of $12,500 to the Lied Discovery Children's Museum to sponsor the "Youth Works/ Art Smarts" program. It is Citibank's fifth year of support for the job-training project for low-to-moderate income teens at the museum.

* GOLF TOURNAMENT -- The Greater Las Vegas Association of Realtors is holding its 11th annual golf tournament 1 p.m. today at the Paiute Golf Course. Proceeds will benefit Habitat for Humanity. For more information, call 732-8177.

* ITALIAN-AMERICAN MAN OF THE YEAR -- Joseph F. Fuscaldo, senior vice president and general manager of Sam's Town hotel-casino is the recipient of this year's Italian-American Man of the Year Award for the West Virginia Heritage Festival. The West Virginia Italian Heritage Festival is held over Labor Day Weekend. Fuscaldo also is active in many community organizations, on the board of directors for the Boys and Girls Club of Henderson, Variety Club International and the Arthritis Foundation. He is a member of the United Way Palladian Club and has been instrumental in raising more than $500,000 for United Way and $150,000 for Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Special needs

* AQUATICS CLASS -- The YMCA is offering a unique post-stroke and arthritis aquatics class for post-stroke patients and arthritis sufferers. The post-stroke aquatics exercise program will be held from 11-11:45 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. Sessions run through Sept. 24, Sept. 29-Nov. 5, and Nov. 10-Dec. 22. The arthritis aquacise program meets the same session days and dates as the post-stroke program, with classes meeting three days a week, Tuesday through Thursday from 1:30-2:15 p.m. For more information on classes, call the YMCA at 877-9622.

* BODY FAT & DIET INFO -- Local residents can have free body fat checks and diet evaluations 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday at UMC's Quick Care Center, 6375 W. Charleston Blvd. This service will involve body fat checks, blood pressure checks and nutrition information. For more information, call 383-6290.

* SKIN CANCER SCREENING -- A free skin cancer screening will be available from 10 a.m.-noon Monday at St. Rose Dominican Hospital, 102 E. Lake Mead Drive, Henderson. The screening will include a 15-minute educational presentation followed by a visual inspection from Dr. Curt Samlaska. The presentation will cover the diagnosis and prevention of skin cancer, as well as the types of skin cancer that can occur with prolonged exposure to the sun. Volunteers

* VOLUNTEER RECRUITMENT FAIR -- A Clark County program that trains volunteers to speak up for abused and neglected children in court is looking for more volunteers. The Clark County CASA Program will hold its semi-annual volunteer recruitment fair from 6-7:30 p.m. Sept. 9 at the Family Courthouse, 601 N. Pecos Road. The program helps 50 percent of the children who need a voice in court and hopes that new volunteers will raise that number to 100 percent. For more information or to RSVP, call 455-4306.

* FIRST-YEAR TEACHER RECOGNIZED -- Michele Miller, a first-year teacher at Stanford Elementary School during the 1997-1998 school year, was Nevada's recipient of the 1998 Sallie Mae First Class Teacher Award. In recognition of her outstanding first year of teaching, Miller will receive $1,500, a personalized memento and a trip to Washington, D.C., for an all-expense-paid award weekend. Miller will be at Lynch Elementary School as of the 1998-1999 school year.
