New group inviting candidates to forum
Wednesday, Aug. 26, 1998 | 10:42 a.m.
A new political group focusing on the black community has formed and is hosting a public forum Thursday night at the West Las Vegas Library.
The group, the Clark County Civil and Political Rights League, has invited gubernatorial primary candidates Joe Neal, Kenny Guinn and Aaron Russo, as well as other primary candidates, including Chuck Lee who is running for sheriff, to the 7 p.m. forum.
Ron Current, the director of public relations for the new group, says it has three major goals: "To get the community more politically involved in the system, to be a watchdog over candidates once they are in office, and to track government programs."
The league also is forming an action group that will be known as Community Action for Positive Change, whose intent will be to work with community leaders in the fight against drugs.
Closed captioning
St. Rose Dominican Hospital is providing funds to Public Broadcast Station Channel 10 for closed captioning for the station's Election '98 programming. Closed captioning for the hearing impaired was pioneered by PBS nearly 30 years ago, and this will be the first time that election coverage in Nevada is closed captioned.
Captivision, a service in Minden, will provide the virtually instantaneous captioning by receiving the program audio through telephone lines from Channel 10 studios and replaying the audio through a computer modem.
Debates, roundtable discussions and all facets of Channel 10's coverage will be closed captioned.
Crime Forum
Business Watch Network Inc. is holding a forum on crime and public safety from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Palace Station hotel-casino.
Speakers will be Clark County Commissioner Erin Kenny; Las Vegas City Councilman Michael McDonald; North Las Vegas City Councilman Paula Brown; Nevada state Assemblyman John Lee; and Nevada state Sen. Mark James. The cost for members is $15 or $20 at the door. Nonmembers must pay $25 or $27 at the door. Please fax RSVPs to 889-1674.
