National office suspends local NAACP leaders

Leaders of the Las Vegas chapter of the NAACP were suspended Tuesday after officials in the national headquarters claimed they did not receive the local office's year-end financial statements.
President of the local chapter, the Rev. James Rogers, and his officers weren't the only leaders nationwide who were suspended for failing to turn in their 1996 financial statements.
While National Field Secretary Mark Clack said dozens of chapters across the country were guilty of the same offense, local officials say they were wrongly accused.
Eugene Collins, a candidate for president of the local chapter, said Las Vegas did turn in its financial statements. Officers are concerned the suspensions will affect upcoming elections and its annual Freedom Fund banquet.
The local office will be taken over temporarily by Edward Lewis, president of the NAACP's Tri-State Conference. National leaders say operations at the local chapter will not change because of the new administration.
