Columnist Peter Benton: Nev. State Seniors crown champions in Mesquite

TOM VANDERLEEST, Wayne Lathrop, Sammy Lee, Warren Batchelor and Frank Singer shot 68s to share first flight honors in the Nevada State Seniors Golf Club's individual stroke play event, played over the Oasis layout in Mesquite.
In the second flight, Jerry Boggess' 64 topped Don Hughes, 67, and Bruce Styerwalt, Duwayne Terlinden, Art Rubin and Al Conrady, all with 68s.
Bob Tyler won the third flight with a 66, one stroke better than Tom Warren, Pat Potalivo and Angelo Morlacci, who shared second place.
Fourth flight victor with 67 was Will Schaff, followed by Jim Forney, 68, and Jim Horonaka at 69.
Mike Malone easily won the fifth flight, coming in with a 64. Felix Ferrer placed second with a 67 and Jack Clark was third with 68.
The second day of play was a four-man scramble at the Palms Golf Course.
The team of Gene Applegarth, Larry Morgan, Angelo Morlacci and Merle Coombs tied for first place with Ron Tyler, Gerald Vanderpool, Dick Budde and Mike Malone at 60.5.
Ron Ludwin, Al Hurtado, Herb Atchley and Frank Boudrou placed third with a 61.5. Fourth at 62.5 were Jerry Boggess, Duwayne Terlinden, Tom Rogers and Dick Danzak.
Seniors add event
The Senior Match Play Challenge, a 16-player, single elimination, match-play tournament, has been added to the 1998 Senior PGA Tour schedule.
This tournament, which will offer a purse of $720,000, will be played Nov. 12-15 at the Bighorn Golf Club in Palm Desert, Calif.
It will feature 16 Senior players competing over three days. Twelve players will be eligible based on the final Senior Tour money list and four sponsor's invitations will complete the field. The winner will receive $240,000.
Massi warriors
Overall winners in the Las Vegas Country Club's Adult-Junior championship were Bob and Robert Massi, who took low gross with a 1-ove-par 73. The Bob and Matt Unger team garnered low net with 56.5.
In the Power Ranger flight (children under 10), Jimmy Burris aided his dad, Steve, considerably in winning low gross with a 52. Jack and Trey Vergiels won low net with a 36.
Coe and Jeremy Powers' 88 took low gross in the X-Men flight (10-12). Low net victors with even par 72 were Paul and Carrie Schofield.
Simpson flight (13-17) low gross went to Bruce and Derek Ashworth and their 75. Low net went to Bob Morrow and Michelle Cobeaga with a 61.5.
Jerry and David Kring's 87 was good enough to capture low gross in the Flintstones flight (18-20). The Charlotte and Alan Ashworth team took low net with 73.
In the Jetsons flight, (21-over), Jon Jaggers and son, Tommy, captured low gross with a 74 while Jack and Jay Pieper took low net honors with a 65.
