Letter: School district needs to look at modifying bus service rules
Saturday, Aug. 22, 1998 | 5:12 a.m.
The Transportation Division advised us on the best route for the kids to take. This route includes walking down a very busy two-lane street that has no sidewalk and crossing two major streets. One has no crossing zone and traffic has a tendency to exceed the 35 mph speed limit. The distance is not what bothers us; both kids are healthy and very energetic. It's the safety. We do not feel this is safe, and therefore not an option for us.
Because we will rely on a car pool, extracurricular activities are out of the question. The kids don't understand the camaraderie and excitement of being involved in these school activities, nor do they care. It's also a sad loss for the school.
One is a very gifted athlete that plays competitive sports in the city, and the other is a member of the city's Rainbow Company Student Ensemble. At what point will the school district realize that the rules need to be modified and make the safety of our children their No. 1 priority?
