Investigation finds no tuberculosis at state DMV

Saturday, Aug. 22, 1998 | 10:34 a.m.

An investigation into the reported case of TB determined the worker actually had contracted a similar, but non-contagious infection, officials for the Nevada Health Division said.

More than two dozen DMV workers were tested as standard procedure when the infected employee's physician made a diagnosis of active tuberculosis earlier this month, said Rich Gilbert, the department's safety officer.

The physician based the diagnosis on preliminary lab results and the condition of the patient, Gilbert said.

But further testing showed the employee was not infected with TB, rather a bacteria which is found in soil, milk and water that cannot be transmitted even when a cough is present.

No DMV employees or members of the public were exposed to TB and no further testing of DMV employees is being considered, Gilbert said.
