Editorial: Steady hand will be sorely missed

Although he was never elected to office, Bible was one of the most influential men in Nevada state government for nearly three decades. At one time or another, he has been the Legislature's chief budget official, the state budget director and, most recently, the state's top gaming regulator.
For almost 10 years Bible was the Gaming Control Board chairman, a period when the industry experienced unprecedented growth. At the same time he remembered that he was a regulator, not a cheerleader, for the industry. Bible, who also is on the National Gambling Impact Study Commission, has been aggressive in trying to get some laggard casinos to acknowledge that problem gambling is an issue that needs to be addressed, not swept under the rug.
After 27 years of exemplary public service, Bible deserves to step back and relax for awhile. Other public employees, at all levels of government, would do well to follow Bible's example of devotion to public service, not to personal ambition.
