Las Vegas Stars scorecard — August 10
Monday, Aug. 10, 1998 | 9:29 a.m.
The Stars avoided a home series sweep by rallying for 5-4 win over New Orleans in 10 innings on Sunday afternoon at Cashman Field. Center fielder Chris Prieto, who had a key hit-and-run single in the ninth inning that helped produce the game-tying run, drove in emergency catcher Archi Cianfrocco with a two-out line single off first baseman Daryle Ward's glove for the game-winner. ... San Diego Padres General Manager Kevin Towers told the San Diego Union-Tribune that the Padres will probably call up five or six minor leaguers when major league rosters are expanded Sept. 1. The leading candidates, according to the Union-Tribune, are Stars third baseman George Arias, Mobile catcher Ben Davis, Cianfrocco, Stars outfielder James Mouton and Stars pitchers Matt Clement and Roberto Ramirez. Davis has a contract clause that requires the Padres to call him up Sept. 1. ... Left-handed reliever Ed Vosberg is scheduled for an Aug. 15 rehab assignment, probably with the Stars, although Rancho Cucamonga also is a possibility. Vosberg had laser surgery on his left shoulder in April and has been on the disabled list all season. ... Utilityman Greg LaRocca, sidelined for five days with a strained hamstring, pinch-hit in the ninth inning Sunday and drew a walk. Pitcher Paul Menhart then pinch-ran for LaRocca and went to third on a surprising hit-and-run single by Prieto, then scored on Dave Hajek's second double of the game. If that wasn't enough, Menhart went out to pitch a 1-2-3 10th to notch his seventh win in 11 decisions. ... Outfielder Aaron Guiel returned from his rehab assignment with Peoria, Ariz., of the Arizona Rookie League and is expected to be activated Tuesday when triple-A rosters are expanded from 23 to 25 men. Guiel underwent laser eye surgery in early July to correct stigmatisms to both eyes.
