Letters: Tripp used good judgment in taping conversations

Tuesday, Aug. 4, 1998 | 11:08 a.m.

After watching how the Clinton White House has operated for the past several years, I don't blame Linda Tripp for taking the trouble to cover her backside in dealing with this bunch of vicious adolescents.

Members of this administration have systemically used the worst kind of smear tactics in dealing with anyone who they even remotely perceive as their enemy. Their mantra seems to be that anyone who disagrees with their political vote-pandering ideology or questions their behavior must be publicly demeaned and destroyed. Talk about paranoiac behavior.

In my opinion, Tripp was very wise and prudent to tape her conversations with Lewinsky. Without the tapes, Tripp would no longer have her job (or what is left of her job). Without the tapes, Tripp would be dismissed by the Clintons as a delusional member of the so-called "vast right-winged conspiracy."

Tripp was very much aware of the consequences of taking on the power of the presidency and I admire her courage and honesty in staying the course.

The White House and their media henchmen have tried to destroy her life, her career, her self-worth and her credibility. If the American public is more comfortable with lies and cover-ups than the truth, we really are in deep trouble.
