Letter: Panel shouldn’t decide whether Yucca Mountain site is safe

Saturday, Aug. 1, 1998 | 4:16 a.m.

I'm sick and tired of these know-it-alls who say everything is safe and nothing can go wrong (what about Chernobyl?).

Do they live in Nevada? Are they going to be alive when an accident occurs that poisons residents in the Southwest, or will it even affect them? No, so a presidential panel should not decide whether it is safe to store nuclear waste at Yucca mountain or if it should be done at all.

Though I live in Alaska, I plan on moving to Nevada soon. I just hope it will remain a safe and clean environment to enjoy for years to come. Let the people of Nevada decide about the Yucca Mountain site. After all, their voice is what matters in the long run.
