Las Vegas man sentenced to jail for dynamite theft
Saturday, Aug. 1, 1998 | 4:46 a.m.
Brian Robinson, 27, Las Vegas, pleaded guilty in April to theft of explosive materials, a felony. A federal grand jury indicted him and another suspect, Brian Bunt, 28, of Henderson, in October.
Robinson told authorities he and Bunt were under the influence of methamphetamine when they went to the Three Kids Mine near the Lake Mead National Recreation Area on the outskirts of Henderson in July 1997.
The theft came about six months after three other men stole dynamite from the same site. All three of those men received prison sentences.
Officials estimated 320 pounds of dynamite was taken from the abandoned mine in the January 1997 theft and 27 pounds in the later theft.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert Bork said a construction company was using the Three Kids site to store explosives. He said authorities have recovered most, but not all, of the stolen dynamite.
