Search for City Manager may be over

The search for a new Las Vegas City Manager might soon be over.

Today, city officials announced that there are four finalist candidates for the position that the City Council will consider in the coming weeks.

City Manager Larry Barton resigned from his $127,000-a-year post on Feb. 1, but has been retained on a monthly basis until a replacement is found.

The finalists for the position are:

David Garcia, deputy city manager in Phoenix since 1990. Garcia was also the deputy administrator for the community redevelopment agency in Los Angeles from 1988 to 1990.

J. Edward Tewes, city manager in Modesto, Calif. since 1991. Tewes was also city manager in Clovis, Calif. from 1986 to 1991 and city manager in Long Beach from 1979 to 1986.

Virginia Valentine, senior vice president at Post, Buckley, Schuh and Jernigan, Inc. in Las Vegas. Valentine was general manager on the Clark County Regional Flood Control District from 1986 to 1993.

Robert W. Parkins, city manager in Palm Springs, Calif. since 1991. Parkins was the city manager of Miami Beach, Fla. for nine years prior to Palm Springs and worked for the city of Miami before that.

The list of finalists will be presented at today's City Council meeting. From there, the City Council will be asking city staff to arrange for the candidates to come to Las Vegas and meet individually with the mayor and council members. The tentative date for their meetings is May 6.

It's estimated it will cost the city $3,500 for travel arrangements for the candidates.
