Gant, who started more than 470 races in a NASCAR career that began in 1973, wasn't injured in the accident Sunday.
Patricia Trivett, 63, of Northamptonshire, England, was driving a rental car northbound on State Road 1610 four miles south of Taylorsville when she ran a stop sign, struck a pickup truck and hit a tree before the car overturned, trooper D.D. McDevitt of the state Highway Patrol said.
Trivett died while being transported to Alexander County Hospital. Her husband, Bryan Trivett, 65, riding in the front passenger seat of the car, was airlifted to Baptist Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.
The Trivetts had been vacationing in North Carolina for about two weeks, McDevitt said.
Robert Watts, 56, of Pfafftown, was driving the pickup truck and Gant, owner of the truck, was in the front passenger seat. Neither was hurt, McDevitt said.
No charges are pending.
