Editorial: Residents pitch in to help save home

No one is suggesting that those belonging to homeowners associations shouldn't pay the dues they agreed to when they joined. But reason has to be used, especially when an individual falls on hard times. These associations like to preach they're developing a better community; foreclosing on a home because someone has fallen behind in dues after being diagnosed with lung cancer hardly conjures a sense of community.
The 1997 Legislature was told about abuses by these associations and passed legislation intended to help protect homeowners. The next session of the Legislature should investigate whether more protections are needed for those who live in communities governed by homeowners associations.
