Union offers reward in Adelson hate crime case

The Culinary Union has put up a $10,000 reward and the Anti-Defamation League $5,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or people who wrote racial slurs at the home of Venetian hotel-casino developer Sheldon Adelson.

The words "Dead Jews" were scrawled with a bar of soap on the poolhouse mirror and an old beer bottle at Adelson's home on Sept. 17.

The incident was classified as a felony hate crime by Metro Police, who have exhausted leads provided by fingerprints.

Adelson suspected Culinary Union members of committing the crime after members had shouted anti-Semitic slogans protesting Adelson's resistance to union organization of future Venetian employees.

Culinary Secretary-Treasurer Jim Arnold sent a letter apologizing for the members' actions and was outraged by Adelson's suspicion.

"Anti-Semitism, racism and bigotry have no place in this community." Arnold said. "This was reprehensible and a cowardly act and the perpetrators must be brought to justice.

"The Culinary Union represents all races, religions and ethnic backgrounds. This union has been in the forefront of the struggle for social justice and we will continue to do our part to fight injustice in the workplace and in the community, now and in the future."

The rewards are being offered through Metro's Secret Witness program. Anyone with information regarding the hate crime is urged to contact Metro at 229-3581 or Secret Witness at 385-5555.
