Kidnapped child found safe

A 15-month-old boy kidnapped early this morning when a man stole the child's mother's car was found safe an hour later.

About 5:45 a.m., the mother pulled up to the Woodridge Apartments, in the 1500 block of Charter Street, near Owens and Eastern avenues, and got out of the car to pick up one of her other children. She left the toddler strapped in a safety seat as she walked away. When she turned around, she saw a man get into her vehicle and drive away with the boy inside, Lt. Larry Spinosa said.

About an hour later, the boy was discovered wandering in the parking lot of the Kmart store at 2671 Las Vegas Blvd. North. North Las Vegas Police took the boy to Child Haven. He then was taken to Columbia Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center for a medical examination and released to his mother, police said.

"It appears at this point that this was a random act of auto theft," Spinosa said.

The kidnapper was still at large late this morning. The stolen car is a 1987 dark green Ford Taurus with two hubcaps missing and Nevada license plate No. 695HSM.

Police have asked anyone with information to call robbery detectives at 229-3591 or Secret Witness at 385-5555.
