Rockies’ top ‘94 draftee dies

Thursday, Sept. 25, 1997 | 10:07 a.m.

The 21-year-old died early Wednesday of just such an attack that struck after he and a teammate had eaten at an area restaurant, according to reports.

"Doug was a terrific young man who we had very high hopes for, and all of our heartfelt sorrow goes out to his family in Sarasota (Fla.) and teammates throughout the system," Rockies general manager Bob Gebhard said.

Million, who had been playing with Colorado's Instructional League team, was drafted by Colorado after being selected National High School Player of the Year in 1994, when he went 12-2 with a 1.21 ERA for Sarasota High School.

Slowed by asthma and control problems throughout his years as a pro, the left-hander struggled to climb the ladder in Colorado's minor-league system.

"I'm still shocked about a young athlete not having a chance to fulfill his dream," Rockies manager Don Baylor said. "I feel for his family."

After a 3-3 season last year at Double-A New Haven, Million started the 1997 season with the Ravens but was demoted to Class A Salem following an 0-5 start. He had a 9.23 ERA and walked 36 hitters in 40 innings.

The Rockies held a moment of silence to remember Million before Wednesday's game against the San Francisco Giants.

"It was a pretty somber day leading up to game time - tragedy," Colorado shortstop Walt Weiss said. "You don't know how much guys are able to put aside and go out and play."

Wednesday's Instructional League game in Phoenix with the Oakland Athletics was canceled. Whether today's game with the Athletics would be played was uncertain late Wednesday.
