Did you get fined $50 for not responding to insurance coverage notifications sent out by the state Department of Motor Vehicles?
If so, you may be entitled to get your money back.
The DMV is in the process of sending insurance verification refund applications to about 1,300 drivers who may be owed the refund on fines that were issued under a statute that has been revised.
The DMV is reviewing records of 5,000 insurance verifications from Oct. 1, 1995, through July 5 of this year to determine who is owed the refunds. The refunds were mandated by the Nevada Legislature after Nevadans complained that the DMV was not reaching vehicle owners before suspending their registrations.
To date, 264 applications have been submitted, with 153 approved for refunds and 111 denied because they indeed had a lapse in vehicle insurance coverage, DMV officials said.
Refund applications will be accepted through July 1, 1998. For more information, call the DMV at (702) 687-3373.
