Letter: Home alone at age 9 was fun, not case of neglect

Friday, Sept. 19, 1997 | 1:52 a.m.

Now we have parents accused of neglect in leaving their 9-year-old home alone. When I was ages 7, 8 and 9, I was home alone a lot more than being with someone. It was afternoons and evenings, and it never occurred to me I was being neglected. In fact, I looked forward to fixing myself something to eat and turning on the radio. (No TV in 1935.)

My favorite dinner was chicken noodle soup right out of the can. Cream-style corn sprinkled with sugar was good too.

I clearly remember all this as some of the pleasures of being a kid.
