Letter: Car storage, repair code violates property rights

Friday, Sept. 19, 1997 | 1:49 a.m.

We are extremely concerned about the extensive reach of Title 19A.04.060 into customary uses of our private residential property, which even the code itself recognizes as uses that would "otherwise be permitted as a matter of right." Bill 97-61 proposes to reach even further.

Title 19A with Bill 97-61 turns good citizens into criminals with misdemeanor penalties of $1,000 and/or six months in jail for each day of violation for such acts as:

While the wording of both Title 19A and Bill 97-61 is convoluted, it can be quite easily demonstrated that the above is true.

These extreme excesses can be reversed by the City Council, either by amending Bill 97-61 or withdrawing it and introducing a new bill with the aim of restoring property rights and liberty.

Action is scheduled on Bill 97-61 at 9 a.m. Monday at Las Vegas City Hall. A copy of the proposal can be obtained from the city clerk's office. City Council members can be reached at 229-6405.
