Gator golfers remain unbeaten

Friday, Sept. 19, 1997 | 9:09 a.m.

Foes of the Green Valley girls' golf team know it. Gators coach Del Sagers knows it. And the rest of the valley knows it.

Green Valley is cruising along this fall with another state championship on its mind. The defending Class 4A titleists moved to 10-0 overall Thursday by blitzing Basic, 206-277, at The Legacy. Ashlei Pendleton was medalist with a 37 and teammate Mary Fernandez fired a 39.

This team is so deep that its top player -- Kimberly Kindig, the third-place finisher at state last season -- hardly was missed against the Wolves. Kindig was unable to play but there were plenty of Gators to pick up the slack.

"If we stay together, I think we'll be the team to beat," Sagers said. "You know, golf is a funny game. The other teams are going to get better and close the gap. We've got to keep working hard because when it comes down to the end, you never know."

Mira Lee carded a 42 for Green Valley, as did Emily De'ath, and Jamie Chanin added a 46. Depth is the strong point for the Gators, who moved to 2-0 in Sunrise Division play, and Thursday's performance was a pretty solid indicator of that.

Basic's Tarah Badger led her team with a 41.

In other matches Thursday, Las Vegas forfeited twice at the Las Vegas Country Club but got a strong showing from Candace Saip, who was medalist in each event. The Wildcats' standout fired a 48 in the two matches. Boulder City, Las Vegas' first foe, fired a 304 and was paced by Kim Yanni's 55; Chaparral scored a 303 against the Wildcats, led by Lisa Gamett's 55.

Cimarron-Memorial downed Western and Palo Verde at Las Vegas Golf Club. The Spartans fired a 248, Western a 277 and Palo Verde a 294. Cimarron's Erin Borcherts and Western's Dallas Ewing were co-medalists at 43.
