Police to target speeders
Tuesday, Sept. 16, 1997 | 10:55 a.m.
Southern Nevada law enforcement officers are stepping up efforts over the next two weeks to catch speeders.
The program, which began Monday and runs through Sept. 28, is the third of four increased enforcement periods being conducted throughout the state this year.
"We've selected speeding for this enforcement wave because so many traffic crashes could be prevented if drivers would travel at or below the speed limit," said Paul Corbin of the Nevada Office of Traffic Safety. "Reaction time is cut dramatically at higher rates of speed."
About 45 percent of Nevada's traffic fatalities involve speeding, according to the Office of Traffic Safety.
Agencies participating in the enhanced enforcement include traffic officers from Metro, North Las Vegas, UNLV, Mesquite and the Nevada Highway Patrol.
The program is being funded through a grant coordinated by the state. The first two waves resulted in more than 14,000 citations issued statewide. The fourth wave, scheduled for December, will concentrate on catching drunken drivers.
