Letter: Mayor should explore ways to boost downtown revenues

Tuesday, Sept. 16, 1997 | 9:43 a.m.

I recall, in 1993, Mayor Jones appeared on a Connecticut radio talk show proclaiming that Mirage Resorts' proposed billion-dollar mega-casino resort in Hartford would be good for their depressed economy.

More recently, according to a March 3 story in the Detroit News, our mayor addressed their city council's casino committee. She is quoted as saying, "You have all of the capacity to become a world-class city." She then said, "You need hotel rooms and an entertainment environment; gaming is only a part of that." Keep in mind, Detroit is the same city that is preparing to enjoy a 21 percent tax on gaming revenue.

What about our own depressed downtown? Wouldn't it be more appropriate, if not patriotic, for Mayor Jones to stay home instead of jet-setting all over the country promoting Steve Wynn's competitive-to-Las Vegas resorts? Maybe then she could help find ways to pump up Glitter Gulch revenues so we do not have to raise the sales tax.
