Romeo’s 4 goals lead Shields’ rout

Friday, Sept. 12, 1997 | 9:31 a.m.

Cheyenne soccer coach Rick Kazee saw his team jump out to a big lead against Boulder City Thursday but didn't know something special had happened until after the feat was accomplished.

Andy Ro meo scored four goals in the first half as the Desert Shields rolled to an 8-0 victory over the Eagles. Kazee said it took a while to figure out Romeo's big effort.

"It really happened kind of fast," said Kazee. "He got one real early and I didn't realize he got three more."

By the time the first half ended, Cheyenne was up 5-0. The Desert Shields substituted liberally after that but Kazee gave credit to the visitors.

"Boulder City was a little overmatched, but they kept coming at us and playing hard," he said. Cheyenne is now 3-1 overall.

In other games Thursday, Robi Grimshaw scored a pair of goals for Eldorado but the Sundevils fell to Basic, 3-2. Green Valley scored two goals in each half to cruise by Vo-Tech, 4-0.

Brad Callahan and Mike Eshrah each tallied a goal as Silverado battled to a 2-2 tie with Rancho. Bonanza nipped Cimarron-Memorial, 1-0, on Dusty Mangus' goal in the second half.

Steve Beckett scored on a penalty kick but Western fell to Clark, 3-1. Bishop Gorman's Mike Diaz scored the only goal of the contest on a second-half penalty kick as the Gaels beat Durango, 1-0. Valley traveled to Las Vegas and blanked the hosts, 2-0.
