Officer faces suspension for brandishing gun after traffic incident

Friday, Sept. 12, 1997 | 10:22 a.m.

The detective, Glenn Thomas, is former administrator of the Police Protective Association.

Police say no incident report was filed, despite the presence of top department investigators at the scene. Instead, the matter was turned over to the department's Internal Affairs Bureau, which police say makes the case a personnel matter not for public review.

An executive with the American Civil Liberties Union of Nevada said the case illustrates why Las Vegas needs an independent police Civilian Review Board.

Unless the community creates such a board, allegations like those against Thomas will remain secret and the public will have to accept police promises that they regulate their own, said ACLU Executive Director Gary Peck.

Thomas, 43, is a detective assigned to special investigations who is considering running for the presidency of the Las Vegas Police Protective Association. The police veteran was accused of pointing a firearm at a 21-year-old man following a traffic altercation that carried over to a shopping center parking lot.
