Letter: Less water would be wasted if lines were buried deeper

Friday, Sept. 12, 1997 | 9:52 a.m.

If Las Vegas Valley Water District General Manager Pat Mulroy and other local government officials are so concerned, it seems like a moratorium would be declared on present and future casinos' use of water.

Has anyone ever considered how much water could be saved by burying water lines to individual homes deeper? I have been told the requirements are no more than six inches deep in the soil. As a new-home owner, it seems like one has to run the cold water forever before it becomes lukewarm in the summer months. How many gallons of water are lost daily by the average homeowner trying to get water that is cool?

What are the requirements for the city in burying its water lines, which would be even larger in diameter? No wonder the water is 98 degrees and hotter coming out of the cold water line into our homes.

Occasionally, I've been told, Las Vegas does get temperatures below freezing. How much water is wasted when pipes burst?

As a taxpayer, I am fed up with rising taxes due to the lack of common sense of local, state and national government officials. Perhaps we citizens could impose a tax on local, state and national government officials for lack of common sense. (They could afford it with the salaries and benefits they have voted in for themselves.)
