High winds fuel brush fire in east LV
Friday, Sept. 12, 1997 | 4:59 a.m.
Clark County Fire Department spokesman Bob Leinbach said that because of the smoke, it was difficult to tell how many acres were burned, but he said it was in the double figures.
"We've got a pretty stiff wind out there, so that's kind of part of our challenge," he said.
The fire began near the Silver Bowl stadium with several spot fires about 1:30 p.m. Because of high winds, the fire spread rapidly, burning underbrush and trees.
At least 12 county fire units and Bureau of Land Management crews were working to put out the blaze. Crews were also placed between the blaze and the nearest mobile home park.
