Long delayed sprucing up of Reno finally moves ahead

Acting as the Reno Redevelopment Agency, the Council voted late Monday to approve OliverMcMillan of San Diego as the master developer for the project.
It is hoped that construction of a movie theater, shops and restaurants along two blocks fronting on the Truckee River will help spur a revitalization of the aging downtown area.
The Council also agreed that the demolition of the 1950s section of the Riverside Hotel should move ahead on schedule Oct. 1, but delayed a decision about the future of the more historic 1927 portion that fronts on Virginia Street.
Also on hold is a decision on a developer to deal with the long-shuttered Mapes Hotel across Virginia Street and a block closer to town from the Riverside.
