Echo Bay Minerals Co., operators of the McCoy/Cove Mine, won a Sentinel of Safety award in the open-pit mine division for achieving 807,070 straight hours with no fatalities or serious injuries.
Mining companies in various categories were recognized for achieving the greatest number of work hours in 1996 without an injury that resulted in lost work days.
"The key is management committed to a safe work environment and employees who look out for one another," said J. Davitt McAteer, assistant labor secretary for the Labor Department's Mine Safety and Health Administration.
The annual safety competition began in 1925 when former President Hoover, a mining engineer, was secretary of commerce.
