Letter: Celebrities, photographers have love-hate relationship

Saturday, Sept. 6, 1997 | 11:33 a.m.

This isn't to say anything positive about the paparazzi, who should never be confused with legitimate, mainstream press photographers, who, for the most part, are decent, honorable and hard-working ladies and gentlemen.

That said, it must be stressed that the two things celebrities fear most are assassination and kidnapping. Princess Diana and the others weren't trying to avoid being photographed as much as they were attempting to avoid unknown men on motorcycles who might have been armed.

Some celebrities are admittedly "paranoid," and with good reason. On March 30, 1981, a man was standing among official press photographers in Washington, D.C. Before anyone noticed and could stop him, he pulled out a gun and fired six bullets at President Ronald Reagan. Nothing more needs to be said.
