The circumstances surrounding the death of softball pitcher Jackie Veley at her home Friday morning are unknown, school officials said.
Veley, 16, passed out in gym class Tuesday and had gone to a doctor twice, Hug Principal Ben Zunino said.
"It's tragic," he said. "She was a great softball pitcher, a good student, a hard worker. People liked her."
Zunino said he plans to announce Veley's death Monday at school and have a moment of silence.
Veley was a two-year varsity starting pitcher for Hug.
