Airlines report fewer passengers
Thursday, Oct. 30, 1997 | 9:23 a.m.
A total of 2,392,312 passengers traveled through McCarran International Airport during September, a 6.1 percent decrease from the same month last year. A total of 22,877,516 passengers have passed through the airport so far this year, an overall decrease of .3 percent.
Most of the decrease in passenger traffic was attributed to an unusually high number of passengers in September 1996, when Southwest Airlines had a $25 fare special, officials said. During the sale, other airlines matched Southwest's promotional fare, creating a temporary swell in passenger traffic.
Southwest, the largest airline serving McCarran, had a 5.6 percent decrease in passenger traffic for September. America West had an 11 percent decrease followed by United Airlines with 4.7 percent and Delta with 11.7 percent.
TWA, meanwhile, posted a 17 percent increase, followed by Northwest at 13.5 percent.
