Board members also said they should be the ones to decide whether meal prices should be raised to recover a $500,000 shortfall in the program that supplies meals to 76 Washoe County schools.
The comments came a day after the Reno Gazette-Journal reported the budget deficit and alleged other questionable practices by acting nutrition director Pat Marble.
Officials said Marble has admitted allowing private caterers to use the district's new $5.8 million central kitchen to prepare food for a private dinner party.
Superintendent Mary Nebgen has assigned an auditor to examine the nutrition services department.
