The Nevada Center for Application and Prevention Technologies will work with similar centers and programs across the West to coordinate substance abuse prevention programs.
The grant from the Department of Health and Human Services was announced on Friday by U.S. Sens. Harry Reid and Richard Bryan.
In addition to the drug prevention center, the state also will receive $415,000 to support Head Start programs in Clark County.
The money will fund an expanded program called, "Starting Early, Starting Smart."
About 250 children, ages 3 to 5, who are enrolled will be studied by child development experts to determine the effectiveness of the program that targets disadvantaged youth.
The expanded services will include a family activity center with educational materials, a lending library, parent support and education groups, child care and home visitation programs.
