Paul Buss, vice president OliverMcMillan, the San Diego developer that is building the project, said the added setback is an attempt to appease critics who want more open space left along the river.
Instead of 14 theaters, the new design would have twelve and a small IMAX theater.
Buss said the extra space will be landscaped with terraces and seating areas.
The new design will be displayed at a 1 p.m. workshop on Saturday at the theater site.
