Summerlin to host 6th year

Monday, Oct. 20, 1997 | 9:22 a.m.

The Tournament Players Club at Summerlin, the host course for the Las Vegas Invitational, offers golfers a 7,243-yard stadium-course layout that quickly gained a reputation as one of the city's finest golfing experiences.

The TPC at Summerlin debuted in 1992 as the home course for the LVI and has received rave reviews from the PGA touring pros. The final two rounds of the $1.8 million Las Vegas Invitational are played exclusively at the TPC at Summerlin.

The TPC, a private club that opened for play in November 1991, was built in the heart of Summerlin, a 22,000-acre master-planned community on the western-most edge of Las Vegas. Summerlin eventually will be home to 150,000 residents.

As a stadium course, the TPC at Summerlin was built to accommodate golf fans with unrestricted views of tee shots, fairway approaches and putting through strategically placed spectator mounds and natural amphitheaters. Still, the integrity of the the course remains.

PGA Tour Investments design architect Bobby Weed was assisted in the course design by player consultant Fuzzy Zoeller, winner of the inaugural LVI in 1983. Zoeller was committed to designing a course that was both fun for members and challenging for the touring pros.

"The TPC at Summerlin was designed with variety in mind," Zoeller said. "You shouldn't have to play the same course on a daily basis."

While the TPC plays to 7,243 yards from the tournament tees, the championship tees measure 6,886 yards, the regulation tees play to 6,292 yards and the ladies' tees are set up to play at 5,395 yards.
