Letter: Breastfeeding helps establish special mother-child bond

Thursday, Oct. 16, 1997 | 11:46 a.m.

As a young mother, I have experienced many of the obstacles mentioned in your article, yet I am still happily nursing my 14-month-old son. However, I know many women who have given in to the formula pressures mentioned in your article (freebies, coupons, etc.). Each time this happens, it's a loss for everyone. It's so scary how marketing could destroy something as ancient and beautiful as breastfeeding in just a matter of years. It is articles like this that are putting breastfeeding back on track and formula in the trash.

One benefit of breastfeeding you overlooked is the unique development of the relationship between mother and baby. Skin-to-skin contact, eye contact and closely cuddling your baby are all done during breastfeeding, unlike bottle-fed babies who feed themselves. These have been proven to stimulate babies physically and mentally. Neonatal units use this type of care in helping premature infants to thrive.

I have laid the groundwork for a healthy and happy relationship with my son. Not to mention the dozens of other advantages I have taken by breastfeeding. I encourage all mothers-to-be to do the same by breastfeeding.
