Henderson approves parks expansion

Thursday, Oct. 16, 1997 | 10 a.m.

HENDERSON -- The city Planning Commission voted unanimously Wednesday to approve the expansion of two parks.

The expansion plans are expected to go before the City Council Tuesday for final approval.

The first project is a 2.2-acre expansion of O'Callaghan Park, located at 601 Skyline Road in southern Henderson. This project is expected to be ready to advertise for bids within the next two months.

The O'Callaghan Park expansion consists of a new restroom facility, two picnic ramadas, continuation of an existing exercise trail, two sand volleyball courts and a new children's play structure.

This expansion is expected to cost an estimated $450,000, according to Bill Rowe, park planner for the city of Henderson.

The second project is located at 645 W. Victory Road. It's a 1.3-acre expansion of Burkholder Park. The original baseball fields opened in 1988.

The estimated $350,000 expansion will include a grass play area, horseshoe pit, picnic area and ramada, sand volleyball court, restroom and children's play structure.

Funding for the projects, according to Rowe, is coming primarily from Henderson's construction tax.

Rowe expects the O'Callaghan project to begin construction by late 1997, and to be completed in four to five months. The Burkholder project should be advertised by the end of the year, and construction could be completed by early summer.
