Green Valley boys, girls advance to state tennis

Team competition at the Class 4A Southern Zone tennis tournament began Wednesday with two blowouts on the boys' side and much closer contests between the girls.
The Green Valley boys downed Bishop Gorman, 18-4 1/2, and Bonanza whipped Silverado, 18 1/2-4. Those two schools earned state tournament berths with the victories and will battle this morning for the zone title. The match is at The Meadows.
Green Valley's girls eked out a 12 1/2-10 win over Bonanza while Gorman eased by Silverado, 14-8 1/2. Those two schools also clinched state bids and will play for the title today at Durango.
Individual competition opens today with the first two rounds of singles and doubles play taking place at six sites around the area.
* VOLLEYBALL: Silverado rallied for its sixth win in a row, 7-15, 15-10, 15-10, against Chaparral. Mindy Fuller and Katie Nihapahli had 15 kills each for the losers ... Christina Attebery had seven kills as Green Valley rolled by Rancho, 15-5, 15-10. Adrianna Soto had three aces and three kills for the Rams ... Basic whipped Las Vegas, 15-5, 15-6 ... Jessica Snook scored seven service points as Bonanza beat Valley, 15-12, 15-9 ... Eldorado won at home against Vo-Tech, 15-6, 15-3 ...Cimarron-Memorial had little trouble with Western in a 15-4, 15-8 victory.
