Thursday, Oct. 16, 1997 | 9:34 a.m.
The program includes Brahms' "Cello Sonata Op. 38 in e minor" and "Piano Trio in C major," as well as Handel's "Sonata in g minor for two cellos and piano." Performing with Katz will be pianist Christie Julien, violinist Teresa Ling and cellist Andrew Smith.
Katz, as a member of the Cleveland Quartet, has been featured on nearly 70 recordings for RCA Victor, Telarc International, Sony and Phillips Records. Of special interest to cellists is his recording of the "Dohnanyi Cello Sonata" with pianist Barry Snyder on Pro Arte Records. He received Grammy Awards in 1996 for Best Chamber Music Recording and Best Recorded Contemporary Composition. Prior to joining Rice University, Katz spent 20 years as a teacher with the Eastman School of Music.
Recently appointed professor of cello and chamber music at the Shepherd School of Music at Rice, Katz will also present an open discussion on "The Role of Chamber Music in Education and Society," as well as a chamber music master class and a cello master class. These events are free to the public. For information, call 895-4415.
Tickets for the Oct. 23 concert are $15 at the UNLV Performing Arts Center box office. Group and student discounts are available. The box office is open 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday-Friday and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday; call 895-3801.
