BE PROUD, LAS VEGAS. ... This week alone, UNLV opened the new Charles Vanda Master Series 1997-1998 season with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Daniele Gatti on Monday. ... Tuesday, the award-winning UNLV Jazz Combo performed in Judy Bayley Theatre. ... On Wednesday, the Performing Arts Center presented the famed Munich Chamber Orchestra.

Tonight at 8, the UNLV Department of Theatre offers Wendy Wassersstein's play, "Uncommon Women and Others," the start of a two weekend run in the Black Box Theatre, admission $5.

The Stars of Kirov Ballet will give two completely different performances at UNLV; Friday as part of the World Dance Series and Saturday as the second in the Vanda Master Series. ... Sunday at 2 p.m., the UNLV Jazz Ensemble plays the Judy Bayley Theatre.

Irish art exhibit

Dr. Robert Tracy of the UNLV College of Fine Arts is putting together an Irish Arts Festival beginning with an exhibition, "Artists For Peace Sake," featuring contemporary works by Irish and Northern Ireland artists. ... The opening reception is 5-7 p.m. Friday in the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Natural History on campus.

Colin McGookin, Jack Pakenham and Chris Wilson are the three artists who will be featured. ... Pakenham and Wilson will be on campus to meet with students and visitors. ... McGookin is scheduled to be on campus the first week in November. ... Dr. Tracy is also working on a film series on Ireland honoring the works of director John Ford.

Tracy was also responsible for the appearance of Seamus Deane, Distinguished Professor of Irish Literature at Notre Dame, at UNLV, Oct. 3. ... Please join us Friday in the Marjorie Barrick Museum.

Dr. Jeffrey Koep, Dean of the College of Fine Arts and Acting Director of the Performing Arts Center has arranged for the Munich Chamber Orchestra to give a special performance on Thursday at the Knudsen Middle School. ...
