Reno police crackdown on problem intersection

Saturday, Oct. 11, 1997 | 2:10 a.m.

Despite numerous warnings along the U.S. 395 off ramp to Moana Lane that right turns are no longer permitted against a red light, the illegal turns continue.

Reno police even conducted a public awareness campaign to notify drivers of the change and of their plan to set up an enforcement detail at the site on Friday.

"We even told everyone exactly when and where we were going to be and what we were going to be citing for," Lt. Jim Ballard said.

In just three hours, 80 people were cited. In all, 108 tickets were issued for turning right on red and 41 other citations were issued for other violations within a six-hour period.

Most of those ticketed admitted to seeing the warning signs but ignored them, Ballard said.

Officers returned to the intersection on Saturday. Ballard said he hoped drivers would pay better heed.

"The traffic cops have writer's cramp," he said.
