A winter storm warning was in effect around the Lake Tahoe Basin above 8,000 feet through Thursday, where as much as a foot of snow was possible, buffeted by 80 mph winds.
Forecasters said the storm could drop 3-6 inches of snow by morning with another 6 inches during the day on Thursday as the snow level dipped to 7,000 feet.
High winds also were forecast for northeast California and northwest Nevada, including Susanville, Gerlach and Winnemucca, with sustained winds of 20-40 mph and gusts over 50 mph possible.
Brisk winds were likely through Friday with cooler temperatures dropping the snow level to around 5,000 feet.
