* WITCHES BALL -- The fourth annual Witches Ball, which raises money for the City of Hope, will be 6:30 p.m. Oct. 25 at the Four Queens hotel-casino. Tickets are $50 and include a buffet dinner, no-host bar, live band, best-costume contest, door prizes, raffle and a trip for two to Hawaii. The Witches Ball is a project of Mr. and Mrs. Dwain Godown, in memory of their son, Richard, who lost his battle with leukemia in 1995.

* GALA LUNCHEON -- The Nevada Association of Fashion Design is hosting a luncheon and entertainment event to benefit St. Judes Ranch for Children at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Allstar Cafe's Diamond Room. Cost is $25 which includes lunch, entertainment and raffle ticket. For information or reservations, call 731-9278.

* NAFD LUNCHEON -- The Nevada Association of Fashion Design is having a luncheon to benefit St. Judes Ranch for Children at 2 p.m. Saturday inside the Diamond Room of the AllStar Cafe, 3785 Las Vegas Boulevard South. * CHRISTMAS IN APRIL -- Christmas in April's first Sweetest Day Soiree black-tie event featuring a silent auction, reception and dinner will be on the evening of Oct. 18 at the Las Vegas Country Club. Tickets are $150. Christmas in April is a volunteer home repair program which allows low-income, elderly or disabled homeowners to live with dignity, safety and warmth.

* OCTOBERFEST '97 -- St. Joseph, Husband of Mary Catholic Church is hosting the annual Octoberfest '97, which is sponsored by the Knights of Columbus. The fund-raiser includes carnival games, music, bingo, international foods, beer and hourly raffles. It will be 3-10 p.m. Oct. 17 and 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Oct. 18 at the corner of West Sahara and Tenaya. Admission is free. All net proceeds benefit scholarships in Southern Nevada.

* DINNER/AUCTION -- The first gala fund-raising dinner to benefit the students of the Jewish Community Day School of Las Vegas will be 7 p.m. Oct. 26 at the Orleans hotel-casino. The school chorus will perform and there will be a charity auction. For more information, call Dan Gendron, 564-6762.

* DUCK DERBY -- Stop by any Sav-on drugstore, Carl's Jr. restaurant or Goodwill store to adopt a $5 little, yellow rubber duck. With each duck adoption you receive more than $200 in coupons. Then go to Sunset Park at 2 p.m. Oct. 19 and cheer from the sidelines for your duck to win a 1997 Chevy S-10 pickup truck, a craps table, a new computer system, airline tickets or a $1,000 shopping spree. All proceeds from the fifth annual Duck Derby will be used to support Goodwill's mission of providing training, employment and job placement services for people with disabilities and other special needs. * POKER RIDE -- Las Vegas Emblem Club 114 and the Rough Riders of Las Vegas are teaming up to present a poker ride for the benefit of Westcare Inc. on Sunday. The event starts with breakfast served 8-9:30 a.m. at Box Car Cove at Lake Mead with the poker ride starting at 10 a.m. Each rider will draw a card at each checkpoint and the riders with the best hands will win prizes. Lunch will be served at 2 p.m. back at Base Camp with the award ceremony following at 3 p.m. Box Car Cove is accessible by boat and passenger car, so families are invited even if they aren't horse riders. Reservations are requested and may be made by calling Janice Mason, 565-2457. Cost is $20 and $10 for children. Additional hands of poker can be purchased for $5.

* ROCK 'N ROLL FUN 5K RUN -- The third annual Hard Rock Cafe "Rock 'N Roll" Fun 5K Run will begin 7:30 a.m. Saturday. Walk-in registration is from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday. Race-day registration will be $25. All racers are eligible to win a trip for two to Hawaii, as well as other prizes. All proceeds remain in Las Vegas to benefit pediatric care at UMC via the Children's Miracle Network.

* TIME BEHIND BARS -- The Muscular Dystrophy Association of Southern Nevada, along with Si Redd's Oasis Resort Casino, will host an executive lock-up from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 15. Local business and civic leaders have committed to spend one hour of their time "behind bars" to benefit the association's patient services program. The Mesquite Police Department will "arrest" the "jailbirds" and Si Redd's Oasis will provide their version of "bread and water." There will be door prizes and a grand prize of a trip for two to San Diego for the jailbird who raises the most amount of money for MDA.

* COWBOY CHRISTMAS BALL -- St. Judes Ranch for Children is holding its third annual Cowboy Christmas Ball on Dec. 4 to provide funding for abused, abandoned and neglected children. St. Jude's Ranch will be honoring Claudine Williams, Lorraine and Blackie Hunt, Vickie and Frank Fertitta, Joyce and Russ Avery, Delis Sartini and Pam and Ed McMahon for their time and financial support. Ty Murray, winner of seven rodeo championships will be the emcee. Tickets are $150, which include a cocktail hour at 6 p.m. a chuckwagon dinner at 7:30 p.m., a live auction, a silent auction, a raffle and a program of country music entertainment. * HABITAT FOR HUMANITY -- Two adjacent homes by Habitat for Humanity are being built by volunteer groups at the intersection of Judson Ave. and Daley St. One house is being cosponsored by Bank of America and Household Bank and TRW is sponsoring the other home. These homes provide decent, affordable housing in the community. For more information, call 453-0406.

* AHA DONATION -- The American Heart Association has received a $250,000 grant from the Lincy Foundation which will fund four research projects this year in Nevada.

* SUNRISE CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL BENEFITS -- The Carpet Barn celebrated their grand opening of its newest location at 6360 S. Pecos last month with an Ultimate Home for the Holidays sweepstakes and a donation of $5,000 to the Sunrise Children's Hospital Foundation.

* RIVER RAFTING -- Black Canyon River Raft Tours is sponsoring a day of rafting on Oct. 18 to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Southern Nevada. Tickets for the river float are $50. The trip begins at the base of Hoover Dam and covers approximately 12 miles of the Colorado River during a rapid-free three-hour journey. Black Canyon River Raft Tour trips are safe for all ages. * KIWANIS GOLF TOURNAMENT -- The Kiwanis Club of Las Vegas and the Clark County Dental Society are sponsoring the third annual Youth Benefit Golf Tournament held for the benefit of the Kiwanis College Scholarship program and the Dental Clinic on Wheels program. The best-ball scramble format will begin with continental breakfast at 9 a.m. and a shotgun start at 11 a.m. Nov. 7. An awards dinner will be 5 p.m. Prizes will be provided, including a Buick Regal provided by Warthen Buick. The entry fee is $135 which includes green fees and cart, breakfast and dinner. * GOLDEN STAR -- Alan Duncan, senior vice president-investments at Prudential Securities received a Prudential Community Champions Golden Star Award of $5,000 for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Las Vegas, where he has served as secretary of the board of directors and a member of the executive committee. Duncan was chosen for his excellence in volunteer commitment, leadership and service.

Special needs

* BLOOD DRIVE -- The Las Vegas Jaycees and United Blood Services are holding a blood drive from 4-11 p.m. Saturday, at the Cashman Field Center. The blood drive is being held in conjunction with the Jaycees 1997 State Fair this week. They need a minimum of 200 donors a day just to keep up with the blood demand at area hospitals. United Blood Services, a nonprofit community blood center, is the sole provider of blood and blood products to Southern Nevada. For more information, call 228-4483.

* LOAN BANK -- If you have equipment such as oxygen concentrators, portable oxygen units or nebulizers and no longer have a use for them, consider donating them to the Loan Bank, a program sponsored by the American Lung Association of Nevada. The goal of the Loan Bank is to provide a temporary loan to lung disease patients who cannot afford to purchase their own equipment. For more information, call 431-6333.
