Power play goals by Ice Dogs ruin Thunder opener

LAS VEGAS - The Long Beach Ice Dogs (1-0) scored five first-period goals on their way to a 6-2 win over the Las Vegas Thunder (0-1) Friday in front of an opening-night crowd of 9,883 at the Thomas & Mack Center.
Patrik Augusta didn't waste time, scoring at 1:33 into the game and twice for the Ice Dogs in the opening period.
Power play tallies by Andrei Vasiljev and Dan Bylsma lead the way. Dan Lambert also scored in the first for Long Beach and Darryl Williams capped the win with an unassisted goal 6:01 into the second period.
Justin Kurtz scored the Thunder's first goal of the season, at 14:03 of the first period. Ken Quinney put away the final goal of the game with 5:11 to play.
Winning goalie Kay Whitmore made 24 saves on 26 Las Vegas shots. Tim Cheveldae faced 10 shots and made five saves for the Thunder in the first 15:10, then was replaced by Konstantin Simchuk, who stopped 17 of 18.
