Shoppers pack stores as holiday retail season kicks off

Store owners reported an increase in customers over last year, saying it appears people are buying rather than browsing.

"We had 500 people at the doors waiting to get in this morning and it has remained steady all day," said Mary Ann Iverson, a spokeswoman for Mervyn's in Reno.

"It has been very packed all day," said Sparks Target spokeswoman Jennifer Coleman, adding the store gave away 1,500 shopper survival kits in one hour.

Park Lane Mall also reported large crowds on what traditionally is the busiest shopping day of the year.
