Letter: Tell casinos, new-home buyers and builders to pay more taxes
Saturday, Nov. 29, 1997 | 4 a.m.
The city of Las Vegas and Clark County sure know how to hit the little guy where it hurts in the pocket.
If the little people had the lobby working for them that the casinos, clubs and hotels have, then our taxes might come down to fit the economy -- and our income.
Perhaps if casinos would stop trying to expand in other states they might be able to pick up some of the bills they are pushing for a sales-tax increase to pay for in Nevada.
Let the clubs, the builders and the new-home buyers pay for the water expansion. Start out with a tax increase for the clubs, casinos and hotels. Make the new tax rate more in keeping with the times.
Think real hard about any new taxes until the big-shot owners of the Las Vegas hotels and casinos begin to pay their fair share of running a gambling city such as ours.
I can remember the days of old when at least through the week the city and county were returned to the people who lived here. How lucky they were.
