UNLV may soon build the parking garage that has been in the works for what seems like an eternity.
Following a development program marred with controversy, misinformation, and general squabbling, the Board of Regents is awaiting an affordable bid from local architects.
"We're obviously not making as fast progress as some would like," said Dr. Robert Ackerman, Vice President of Student Services. "But we're doing what we need to do."
According to the Audit Committee of the Board of Regents, as soon as an architectural design is chosen, a contract will be awarded for construction.
The decision still remains as to what would be the most economical design. Various ideas kicked around included a 500-600 space garage that would cost approximately $4 million. Other plans were to reconfigure current parking facilities or to buy land around the university for the construction of additional lots.
The proposed location for the parking garage is off Harmon Avenue near the Thomas and Mack Center.
Ackerman stresses that the university is trying to expedite the process in order to meet the needs of the student body.
"We're trying to move things forward,' he said.
